Lunch at Super J’s Authentic Hawaiian dishes

The well fed family with one of the owners under the “R” in Super J’s above

We’re sitting on the rocks after a fantastic snorkel at a snorkel spot called Two Steps, on the SW corner of the Big Island, and I struck up a conversation with a couple that turned out to be regulars from Montana.

After a morning snorkel I’m usually thinking of two things, first lunch, and then a nap.

We, I’m here with our entire immediate family, finally got down to the subject of lunch spot recommendations.

They promptly suggested a nearby restaurant named Super J’s at:

83-5409 Hawaii Belt Rd
Captain Cook, HI 96704

We arrived around 1pm and the small dining room, and counter ,was uncrowded. We were greeted by the 2 women that appeared to be the primary force behind the establishment.

The friendly folks helping us decide what to do.

Being a group of tourists from the mainland, the menu was a little daunting. No problem, the folks behind the counter quickly recognized that we needed help. We decided that it would be best if they just brought food to our table based on their recommendations.

The 6 of us settled down into about half of their indoor seating space and wondered how this would work.

That plan worked out perfectly.

Soon the table was covered in dishes that I can confidently state that none of us had ever eaten before. It sparked a lot of conversation as the dishes arrived and we tried to guess what they all were.

We enjoyed every bite and the table conversation consisted primarily of talking about “Have you tried this yet? or “isn’t this amazing?” Or similar exchanges.

I realize that this has turned into a shaggy dog story, but the simple fact is that the people and food were great.

So don’t miss it if you’re in the neighborhood. You won’t regret it.
